Operating modes
P – Parking lock
You should only engage the parking lock when the
vehicle is stationary.

e Press button P .
If operating mode P flashes, the parking lock is
not engaged. The vehicle can roll away.

Select operating mode P again from R .
R – Reverse gear
e Only engage reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary and the brake is applied.
N – Neutral
Operating mode N must be selected, e.g. when the
vehicle is being towed or in car washes.
e
Only select the desired drive setting for driving
off ( D , M or R ) when the engine is idling and keep
the brake pedal pressed.
Information
If the vehicle is parked in operating mode N , operat-
ing mode P will be engaged after a few minutes. A
message appears on the instrument cluster.
D – Automatic shifting mode
e Engage operating mode D for “normal” driving.
The gears are automatically selected according
to the accelerator pedal position and vehicle
speed.
Information
Shifting gears on the steering wheel allows you to
switch temporarily from automatic shifting mode D
to manual shifting mode M .
For example in the following cases:
– Downshifting before bends or when entering
built-up areas.
– Downshifting when driving downhill (engine
braking effect).
– Downshifting for short bursts of speed.
Manual shifting mode remains engaged in the fol-
lowing cases:
– In overrun mode.
– When the vehicle is stationary, e.g. at an
intersection.
– If the shifting logic of the vehicle were to be
downshifted by more than one gear.
Manual shifting mode is deactivated again in the
following cases:
– Automatically after approx. 6 seconds.
M - Manual shifting mode
The gearshift paddles on the steering wheel allow
the eight forward gears to be engaged.

Press button M .
The currently engaged gear is retained when you
change from D to M .
When switching from M to D , the appropriate
gearshift map for the present driving style is se-
lected and the corresponding gear is selected.
