Troubleshooting: Reading Discs
Symptom Possible
Causes
Solutions
Defective DVD, CD-
ROM, CD-R, or CD-RW
disc.
Fingerprint,
contaminants, or
scratches on the disc’s
surface that prevent the
drive from reading or
writing data.
Clean the disc as detailed on page
31.
Try a different disc.
Disc is badly
manufactured.
Try a different disc.
Bad connection
between the
PlexCombo drive and
the computer.
Make sure the IDE cable is
securely connected to the
computer motherboard and the
PlexCombo.
Inspect the IDE ribbon cable for
any signs of distress, such as
kinking.
Disc is inserted upside
down.
Eject the disc and load it with the
label or text side up.
PlexCombo drive
has read errors,
may not respond
when accessed
from My
Computer or
Explorer, or
cannot run a
program.
Blank CD-R or CD-RW
disc is inside the drive.
Remove the disc from the drive
and test the drive by using another
disc.
Trying to read a CD-
RW disc in a CD-ROM
drive that does not
support it.
Use the PlexCombo to read CD-
RW discs or use a different CD-
ROM drive. Only CD-ROM drives
manufactured after 1997 can read
CD-RW discs.
UDF reader is not
installed on the system
to read CD-RW or
packet-written discs
from a CD-ROM drive.
Refer to your packet writing
software manual for how to obtain
a UDF reader and install it on the
computer where you need to
access these discs.
Cannot use other
CD-ROM drives
to read discs
written by
PlexCombo.
Session was left open
on a CD-R disc and
does not have a Table
of Contents.
Place this disc back into
PlexCombo and use the same
software originally used to write to
it. Then close the session/disc.
