The majority of initial instrument setups in phased array mode are accomplished 
using the 

Beam

 setup page accessible by choosing 

1/5> PA Probe > Beam

. Automatic 

probe identification or manual probe definition allows to easily set appropriate 
parameters for the selected phased array transducer, wedge, and inspection type. For 
more information on using the 

Beam

 setup page, see section 12.2 on page 240.

To set up the EPOCH 1000 Series phased array mode before calibrating

1.

Use the 

Beam

 setup page to define the probe, wedge, geometry, focal laws and 

other general inspection items.

2.

Press 

[GAIN]

 to select an initial gain value that is appropriate for the calibration 

and adjust the value by using the 

[UP]

 and 

[DOWN]

 arrows or the adjustment 

knob. If the appropriate gain level is unknown, set the initial gain to 12 dB and 
adjust it as necessary during calibration.

3.

Use the 

Range

 parameter to set the range based on the sound path range within 

the selected calibration block.

Always use the steepest angle to select the maximum range for calibration. This 
ensures full coverage across all focal laws during calibration.

17.2 Calibration Types

The EPOCH 1000 Series phased array mode requires up to three types of calibration 
to be performed to attain accurate distance and amplitude measurements across all 
focal laws within the angular coverage area (sweep). These three calibration types are 
described in the following sections.

17.2.1

Velocity

The 

Velocity

 calibration type allows you to properly calibrate for the velocity of 

sound within the test material. This calibration type can only be performed using a 
single reflector of known sound path (typically the arc or back wall of a test block).
