charged until the engines are shutdown and the
automatic relay opens, isolating the house battery
from the engine batteries.
6.4 Parallel Switch & Dead Batteries
Dead Engine Starting Battery
In the event of a dead starting battery for an
engine, the engine batteries can be placed in a
temporary parallel configuration. This allows you
to start an engine from both engine batteries
combined.
To connect the batteries in parallel to start the en-
gines, make sure both engine battery switches are
on, then turn the EMERGENCY PARALLEL switch
on and start each engine. Once the engines have
started and systems have stabilized, turn the
EMERGENCY PARALLEL switch off.
Dead House Battery
In the event of a dead house battery, there are a
couple options:
•
If at the dock and the boat is equipped with
the optional battery charger, simply plug in the
shore power and operate the battery charger
to recharge the house battery.
•
If at sea, start the engines. Once the engines
are running, the alternators will charge the
engine and house batteries. The battery will
continue to be charged until the engines are
shutdown, isolating the house battery from
the engine batteries.
Notice:
If a battery is fully discharged for a lengthy
period, it may become permanently damaged
and will not be able to hold a charge.
6.5 Ignition Switch Panels
Ignition Switch Panels
Ignition switch panels are unique to each engine
and the engine control options selected. Your
dealer will provide you with the proper starting
procedure for your boat at the time of delivery.
Additional information for the ignition switch sys-
tem installed in your boat is located in the engine
and control system operating manuals included in
your information packet.
Typical Key Ignition Switches
The following instructions is an overview for Mer-
cury ignition switch panels commonly installed
on Monterey boats. Your boat may be different
depending on the options selected.
Mercury Key Ignition
Each ignition switch is a separate, key activated
switch, located in the helm near the steering
wheel, which starts and stops the engine. Each
switch has OFF-ON and momentary START posi-
tions.
Starting Procedure
To start the engines, make sure the engines are
down, the stop switch lanyard is engaged and
your hand is on the engine control handles in the
neutral position. Turn the port engine ignition
key to the START position briefly, then release
the key. The computer will automatically check
all engine systems and start the engine. Once
the engine stabilizes, repeat the starting proce-
dure for the starboard engine. Stop the engines
by turning the key switches to the OFF position.
The ignition circuits are protected by fuses located
on each engine.
