ROOM ACOUSTICS

The distance the speakers are placed from room boundaries can affect the amount
of bass. Placement closer to corners generates more bass output, farther away from
corners will generate less bass. Rooms with different height, width and length are
preferable for best bass performance. If possible, place the speakers so they are
firing along the longest wall in order to fill the room most efficiently with music.
In other words, if the room is 10-feet (3m) wide and 20-feet (6m) deep, place them
along the 10-foot (3m) wall. There will be less wall reflection and therefore a more
natural sound.

For best stereo imaging, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from
their respective side walls. If the distance from one speaker to the listener is very
different from the other it can affect the soundstage or stereo imaging. Therefore,
the ideal position is having the speakers equidistant to the listener.

SPEAKER PLACEMENT

A general guideline for speaker placement is to set up the space between speaker
and listener at approximately 1 to 1-1/2 times the distance between the speakers.
For example, if the speakers are ideally placed a minimum of 6-feet (1.8m) apart, the
best seating position would be 9-feet (2.4m) away.

The Omnipolar HDT-R surround speaker mounted on the side walls or on the
rear wall will provide a spacious surround effect with seamless blending from front
to rear.

For side wall applications, position the HDT-R slightly behind the listening position,
raised to an approximate height of 6 feet. Rear wall applications should also be
mounted approximately 6 feet up with a distance of at least 5 feet between them.
In both cases, it's important to position the speaker at least a foot away from any
boundaries to enjoy the full effect of spacious Omnipolar dispersion. Please
remember that these are just guidelines and that ideal positioning is dependent on
the size and shape of the room. Small changes in position can have large effects on
the sound quality so use these instructions as a starting point and experiment with
slight changes to the location to maximize the results.

STAND MOUNTING

The height of the speaker can greatly affect the sound of the speaker and should
position the speaker's tweeter to approximately ear level when sitting. We strongly
recommend using a stand of approximately 24 inches in height, preferably made of
metal. A stand with proper height and rigid construction will guarantee maximum
performance.

The ratio of distance to the listener doesn't change based on the chosen application
of the HDT-F, but the placement perimeters do. Stand mount applications can offer
optimal performance when following a guideline referred to as the rule of thirds.
This formula dictates that the room should be divided into thirds, with the speakers
placed a third of the way into the room. The listener is positioned in the second
third of the room, with the last third of the room behind the listener. This may be
impractical or difficult to integrate into some decors, so try to at least respect an
adequate distance from side and rear walls. The HDT-F's should be positioned at a
distance of two to three feet, a minimum of at least 1-foot from rear and side walls.
Do not make the side and rear wall distances equidistant from the speaker, as it will
negatively affect room reflections.

Once the speaker position has been selected, choose a familiar recording to
determine whether the speaker's positioning provides the best musical quality,
imaging, and tonal balance. You may then adjust the three tone switches to suit
personal tastes, though the Free Space position on the Mid Bass EQ is
recommended.

CABINET OR WALL UNIT
APPLICATIONS

The general guidelines of speaker placement for cabinets or wall units are the same
as those for stand mounting, but a few extra steps will ensure optimal performance
in even the least optimal positions.

Whenever possible, bring the HDT-F flush to the edge of the cabinet. If this is
not possible, recess the speaker as necessary, and adjust the Mid-Band EQ to the
+1.5db setting. This will compensate for the diffraction caused by the baffle not
sitting flush and result in clean mid band frequencies. This setting should also be used
if the speaker will be positioned behind any type of cloth grille over the cabinet or
wall unit enclosure. In this case, remove the HDT-F grille and use the setting
+1.5db setting.

Use the rubber bumpers or gold feet provided on the bottom of the HDT-F to
eliminate the transference of any potential low frequency resonance.

INFINITE BAFFLE OR BUILT IN
APPLICATIONS

The HDT-F's sealed enclosure, solid cabinet construction, and tone controls make it
ideal for all in-wall custom applications. Like a cabinet or wall unit installation, the
HDT-F should be mounted as flush as possible to the wall. The installation of the
speaker into the wall should be as tight as possible, leaving little to ideally no gap
between the speaker and the wall. If a cloth grille will be added to cover the
speaker, remove the grille of the HDT-F. Adjust the Mid Bass EQ from the Free
Space to the Flush position to compensate for the proximity of the speaker to the
wall, thus compensating for the inherent boomy effect in the 100 to 250Hz range.

CONNECTIONS

One set of standard speaker cable can be used if you plan on a conventional
connection. Connect the speaker cable from the positive (+) terminal on the amp
to the positive (+) terminal on the speaker. Connect the negative (-) terminal on
the amplifier to the negative (-) terminal on the speaker. This method can be
applied to the bi-wirable HDT-F speakers as long as the shorting straps are in
place on the terminals.

BI-WIRE CONNECTION

Start this process by removing the shorting straps. The tweeter's terminals are on
top, the woofer's on the bottom. If you are using two lengths of wire instead of a
pre-made bi-wirable cable, twist the positive leads of the two wires together so
they can both be inserted into the positive terminal on the amplifier. Follow the
same procedure for the negative leads. Then connect the two positive leads to
the positive terminals in back of the speaker, and the negative leads to the
negative terminals.

Be sure to turn off your amplifier when connecting speakers to your amplifier.
Not doing so could result could result in shorting from the speaker's leads and
potential damage to the amplifier.

Treble, Mid Band, and Mid Bass EQ's are individual controls on the HDT-F, permitting
a boost to the high, midrange, and bass frequencies. This allows perfect tailoring
of all frequencies to maximize performance in any setting or installation, and
accommodate personal tastes. The Treble EQ will boost will boost a specific range
of high frequencies by 2 db's, the Mid Band EQ will boost specific a specific range
of midrange frequencies by 1-1/2 db's, while the Mid Bass EQ will effect the
100-250Hz range to prevent superfluous bass when the HDT-F is being used in a
built in application.
