Safe Driving The First 1500 km/1000 Miles
Emission Control
Certain system s of the engine serve
to keep the toxic com ponents of the
exhaust gases within perm issible
limits required by law. (Nevertheless,
we urgently advise you not to let the
engine run in a closed garage.) These
system s, of course, will fu n ctio n
properly only when maintained strictly
according to factory specifications.
Any adjustm ents on the engine
should, therefore, be carried o u t only
by qualified MERCEDES-BENZ te ch n ­
icians. The adjustm ents of the engine
should not be altered in any way.
Moreover, the specified service and
maintenance jobs m ust be carried out
regularly according to MERCEDES-
BENZ servicing requirem ents. For
details refer to the Maintenance
Booklet.
Engine Oil Consumption
Engine oil consum ption can only be
determ ined after a certain mileage
has been covered. During the break-
in period, higher oil con su m p tio n may
be noticed and is normal.
The more cautiously you treat your
engine during the break-in period, the
more satisfied you will be w ith its
perform ance later on. Therefore,
drive your vehicle during the firs t
1500 km/1000 miles at m oderate
vehicle and engine speeds.
During this period, avoid heavy loads
(full th ro ttle driving) and high RPMs
(no more than
2/3
of maximum
perm issible speed in each gear).
A void accelerating by kickdown. It is
n o t recom m ended to brake the
vehicle by means of manually shifting
to a lower gear. We recom m end to
select positions “ 3 ” or “ 2 ” only at
m oderate speeds (for hill driving).
A fte r 1500 km /1000 miles speeds
may gradually be increased to the
perm issible maximum.
