Safe Driving
Brake Pad Wear Indicator Lamp
The brake pad wear indicator lamp in
the instrum ent clu ste r com es on
when the key in the steering lock is
turned to driving position “ 2 ” and it
m ust go out when the engine is
running. If the indicator lamp lights up
during braking, this show s that the
fro n t wheel brake pads are worn.
Have brake system checked in a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station as
soon as possibile.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid should be changed once a
year, preferably in spring.
Only use brake fluid recom m ended by
us. For fu rth e r inform ation, refer to
,,Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants, e tc .” .
Charge Indicator Lamp
Should the charge indicator lamp fail
to com e on prior to starting when the
ignition key is in position ” 2 ” or
should it fail to go out after starting or
during operation, this indicates a fault
w hich m ust be repaired at a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station as
soon as possible.
When the charging indicator lamp
glow s while the engine is running, the
V -belts may be lose or m issing w hich
makes the w ater pump inoperative.
This may cause overheating and
damage to the engine. In this case the
V -belt m ust be tightened or replaced
at once.
Fuel Reserve Warning Lamp
The fuel reserve warning lamp will
com e on when the key in the steering
lock is turned to position “ 2 ” , and will
go out after the engine is running.
If the warning lamp stays on after the
engine starts, o r com es on while
driving, it indicates that the fuel level
is down to the reserve quantity.
Oil Pressure Gauge
The oil pressure may drop at idle
speed to 0.3 bar/4.4 psi if the engine
is at operating tem perature. This will
not jeopardize its operational reliabil
ity. Pressure must, however, rise
immediately upon acceleration.
The oil pressure gauge will not
provide early warning of low oil level.
Therefore, check oil level at regular
intervals w ith the dipstick.
Coolant Temperature Gauge
Due to the pressurized cooling
system , the coolant only starts boiling
at a tem perature of approx. 125° C/
257° F with an a n ti-co rro sio n /a n ti
freeze-biended coolant fill protecting
dow n to —30° C / — 22° F (see also
‘‘ Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants, e tc .” ).
During severe operating conditions
and stop-and-go city traffic, the
coolant tem perature m ust not rise
above the red marking.
