Step 27: Load the speed test cut file
Cut charts for most plasma cutters give estimated speeds to use for initial MPMP cuts. To find
the best cutting speed, you must evaluate the quality of cuts made at different speeds. Sever-
al files are provided for speed test cutting with different speed ranges.

components
Instructions
• Locate the cut charts. A typical cut chart is shown in the illustration.
• Find the charts with the right material and thickness (0.280” mild
steel for the demo cut pipe in illustrated cut chart) and select a
chart with that material near the center line.
• Verify amperage and install the consumable set for that amperage (60
amps for the demo cut pipe in illustrated cut chart).
• Use the menu item
File > Open G-code
, select the appropriate
speed test file, and click the
Open
button. Again, select a file with the
cut chart’s speed nearest the center of the speed ranges: 220 to 150,
180 to 110, 140 to 70, or 100 to 30.
Illustration
Select the chart for the material type, amperage, and thickness near the center
of the chart if possible. Then find the recommended speed values. Here, in this
example, they are
90
to
118
for
1
⁄
4
”
. Note also the cutting height of 0.128.
Select a speed test file with those values
near the middle; here, in this example, we
selected:
Line speed 140-70 for pipe.fgc
.
Note: selecting values from the middle of a
chart or from the middle of the speed test
range is not required, but generally gives
the best, most consistent results.
