Replacing A Switch
This section contains procedures for replacing two types of switches:
• A switch that has malfunctioned and needs replacement
• A switch that is still functional, but needs upgrading (for example, if you want to
replace a switch with a higher port count switch)
To Replace a Malfunctioning Switch
1
Direct the traffic to a neighboring switch using software tools on each connected
host, and shut down the malfunctioning switch to prevent interswitch traffic
emigrating from the bad switch.
2
Power on the replacement switch and verify that the BIST completes successfully.
3
Prepare the replacement switch as a separate fabric by following the procedures in
Chapter X
of the
SANcastle SANman User Guide
or the
SANcastle CLI O/S User
Guide
. Ensure all the settings on the new switch match those that were configured
on the malfunctioning switch.
4
Disconnect the Fibre Channel connections, one at a time, from the bad switch and
connect them to the replacement switch, starting with the ISL connections.
5
Check the switch using the procedures in “Verify the SAN”.
This concludes the procedure for replacing a malfunctioning switch.
To Upgrade a Switch
1
To keep the same configuration after a switch upgrade, write the switch
configuration and zoning parameters down on a piece of paper.
2
Direct traffic to neighboring switches using software tools on each connected host.
If you are replacing a core switch, redirect the traffic for each host that is routed
across the switch that is being replaced. Verify that all traffic is redirected using the
command path:
\
Analysis\SwitchLevel\Performance
3
Power off the switch. A fabric reconfiguration occurs to update the fabric.
4
Power on the replacement switch, and verify that the BIST completes successfully.
5
Prepare the replacement switch as a separate fabric by following the procedures in
Chapter X of the
SANcastle SANman User Guide
or Chapter X of the
SANcastle
CLI O/S User Guide
.
