3.5.2 Line topology
Devices and control systems in this topology are connected to each other in line (daisy chain).
There is no need for an additional Ethernet switch to connect the devices.
3.5.3 Ring topology
Devices and control systems in this topology are connected to each other in line. Additionally the
first and the last device are connected to the control system building a ring. The control system
must support this topology. This topology is typically preferred if redundancy is required.
INFORMATION!
Devices in this network topology need two Ethernet ports to forward the data telegrams to the
next device. If the device is placed at the end of a line, then a device with only one Ethernet port is
sufficient. Devices with two Ethernet ports can be used (for details refer to Overview of the
PROFINET IO M12 connectors on page 10
).
