3.11.4 Top Vented Cavity Framing
NOTE: This vented cavity option allows the use of 19 gauge or less
hardware mesh that is 1/2” x 1/2” to prevent any items from entering
the vented cavity. This hardware mesh is optional and the only
approved item for use within the air discharge opening.
WARNING: Do NOT cover or place any items in the area of the air
discharge opening. Failure to comply with these instructions could
create a fire hazard. Grilles and louvers are not allowed in the discharge
opening.
WARNING: Ensure air flow within the air discharge opening is not
restricted in any way.
WARNING: Minimum dimensions for the air discharge MUST BE
maintained after all finishing materials are installed.
•
Figure 3.19 shows the fireplace chamber ending 1-1/2” from
the ceiling on all three sides with the entire top of the chamber
1-1/2” from the ceiling.
•
Figure 3.20 shows the installation of crown molding or similar
trim work that goes up to the edge of the air discharge opening.
This molding or trim cannot decrease the minimum opening
requirement.
•
Figure 3.21 on the following page shows an alternative
installation for the top vented cavity option with an air discharge
overhang in front of the air discharge opening. This installation
method can provide a means to visually hide the air discharge
opening.
