Possible Sources Of Carbon Monoxide
Insideyourhome,appliancesusedforheatingandcookingarethe
mostlikelysourcesofCO.Vehiclesrunninginattachedgaragescanalso
producedangerouslevelsofCO.
COcanbeproducedwhenburninganyfossilfuel:gasoline,propane,
naturalgas,oilandwood.Itcanbeproducedbyanyfuel-burning
appliancethatismalfunctioning,improperlyinstalled,ornotventilated
correctly,suchas:
Possiblesourcesincludefurnaces,gasranges/stoves,gasclothes
dryers,waterheaters,portablefuelburningspaceheaters,fireplaces,
wood-burningstovesandcertainswimmingpoolheaters.Blocked
chimneysorflues,backdraftingandchangesinairpressure,corroded
ordisconnectedventpipes,oralooseorcrackedfurnaceexchanger
canalsoreleaseCOintoyourbuilding.Vehiclesandothercombustion
enginesrunninginanattachedgarageandusingacharcoal/gasgrillor
hibachiinanenclosedareaareallpossiblesourcesofCO.
ThefollowingconditionscanresultintransientCOsituations:
Excessivespillageorreverseventingoffuel-burningappliancescaused
byoutdoorambientconditionssuchas:Winddirectionand/orvelocity,
includinghighgustsofwind,heavyairintheventpipes(cold/humidair
withextendedperiodsbetweencycles),negativepressuredifferential
resultingfromtheuseofexhaustfans,simultaneousoperationof
severalfuel-burningappliancescompetingforlimitedinternalair,vent
pipeconnectionsvibratingloosefromclothesdryers,furnaces,orwater
heaters,obstructionsin,orunconventional,ventpipedesignswhich
canamplifytheabovesituations,extendedoperationofunventedfuel-
burningdevices(range,oven,fireplace,etc.),temperatureinversions
whichcantrapexhaustgassesneartheground,caridlinginanopenor
closedattachedgarage,ornearahome.
