Voltage
Selects the logarithmic (decibel) scale for all
filtering and averaging processes. This scale is
“Video” because it is the most common display and
analysis scale for the video signal within a
spectrum analyzer. This scale is excellent for
finding CW signals near noise. When this type of
averaging is selected,
LgAv
appears on the left side
of the display.
Power
In this average type, all filtering and averaging
processes work on the power (the square of the
magnitude) of the signal, instead of its log or
envelope voltage. This scale is best for measuring
the true time power of complex signals. When this
type of averaging is selected,
PAvg
appears on the
left side of the display.
Log Pwr
In this Average type, all filtering and averaging
processes work on the voltage of the envelope of
the signal. This scale is good for observing rise and
fall behavior of AM or pulse- modulated signals
such as radar and TDMA transmitters. When this
type of averaging is selected,
VAvg
appears on the
left side of the display.
There are actually four types of averaging processes within a
N9322C. All, except VBW filtering, are affected by this
setting. They are listed as follows:
• Trace averaging
Averages signal amplitudes on a trace- to- trace basis. (Press
Log Pwr
or
Pwr
)
• Average detector
Averages signal amplitudes during the time or frequency
interval and represents the result as a single measurement
point.
• Noise marker
Averages signal amplitudes across measurement points to
reduce variations for noisy signals.
• VBW filtering
Performs a form of averaging of video signal.
