PTP
The purpose of Precision Time Protocol (PTP), as defined by IEEE 1588-2008 [4], is to synchronize
independent clocks running on separate nodes of a distributed measurement and control system to a
high degree of accuracy and precision.
PTP achieves accuracy when hardware timestamping is used. IEEE 1588-2008 standard has defined two
types of switches (or routers) which specifically deal with their own queues. One device is called a
transparent clock. This type performs hardware timestamps when a sync message arrives or departs the
transparent clock.
