512 hosts across all fibre-channel and SCSI ports configured on one machine. The
ESS can support up to 4096 LUNs across all of its fibre-channel and SCSI ports. If
the software in the fibre-channel host supports the SCSI command
″
Report LUNs
″
,
then that host will support 4096 LUNs per fibre-channel port on the ESS. If the
software in the fibre-channel host does not support the SCSI command
″
Report
LUNs
″
, then the host will only support 256 LUNs per fibre-channel port on the ESS.
System/390 hosts
This section includes information about planning data migration for System/390 host
systems. It also includes information about IBM services for data migration.

Planning data migration for MVS environments
The following guidelines and resources can help you plan data migration for MVS
environments:
1. Consider the major environments:
v
System-managed storage (SMS)
The SMS environment greatly simplifies introduction of new DDMs in
comparison to non-SMS environments. If your environment is SMS, you can
use
3390 Installation and Migration for DFSMS
(GG66-3155) to help you plan
your migration.
v
Non-SMS
If your environment is non-SMS, you can coordinate a migration to SMS with
a migration to the new storage server. You can also consider SMS and
non-SMS migrations as separate projects.
2. Use
IBM 3390 Direct Access Storage Migration Guide
(GG24-3373) as a
reference for overall migration for both SMS and non-SMS environments.
3. Identify the most critical data and determine in advance some methods to verify
that the data has been moved correctly.
Planning data migration for VM environments
You can simplify data migration for a VM environment by using DFSMS/VM
®
, which
is a no-charge feature of VM/ESA. This lets you manage and control the use of VM
disk space. It will also move minidisks from one media to another.
Use of DIRMAINT also provides tools that will manage the movement of CMS
minidisks from one media to another.
IBM data migration and other services
IBM “Product Support Services, Storage Services and Support” provides
storage-related services for a fee. For information about installation planning or
migration planning, including the migration services described below, call
1-800-IBM-4YOU and request information about storage services offerings.
IBM Product Support Services provides migration services for your Enterprise
Storage Server as part of a new migration service for storage area networks. These
migration services offer you a fast, easy, reliable method of migrating your data to
