The IBM Enhanced Diagnostics will isolate your computer hardware from
software that was preinstalled (or that you have installed) on your hard
disk. The programs run independently of the operating system, and must
be run either from CD or diskette.
You can use this program to test the hardware (and some software)
components of your computer. This method of testing is generally used
when other methods are not accessible or have not been successful in
isolating a problem suspected to be hardware related.
To start the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics program using the Product Recovery
CD, do the following:
1. Turn off your computer and any attached devices.
2. Turn on all attached devices; then turn on your computer.
3. When you see
Press F1 For Configuration/Setup
, press the F1 key.
4. When the Configuration/Setup Utility program menu appears, select
Start Options
.
5. Select Startup Sequence and press Enter.
6. Write down the device currently selected as the First Startup Device.
Then write down the devices selected as Second Startup Device, Third
Startup Device, and Fourth Startup Device. You must restore these
settings when you finish running diagnostics.
7. Select the First Startup Device. To start from the CD, select CD-ROM.
8. Press Esc two times to return to the Configuration/Setup Utility
program menu.
9. Select Save Settings and follow the prompts.
10. Select Exit Setup and follow the prompts.
11. Place the Product Recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive.
12. Shut down and restart the computer. The Product Recovery CD will
load.
13. A new menu opens with the options for viewing system utilities:
Run Diagnostics
System Information
14. Select Run Diagnostics to open the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics
Diagnostics program to try to track down a problem. Select System
Information to display the current computer configuration.
15. When you finish running the diagnostic program, press Esc, remove the
CD from the CD-ROM drive, and turn off the computer. You must
restore the First Startup Device back to the original setting. Follow
steps 2 through 9
