Manual handling of loads
The Manual Handling of Loads Directive 90/269/EEC from the European
Community lays down the minimum health and safety requirements for the
manual handling of loads where there is a risk particularly of back injury.
Before lifting or carrying a heavy object, the following questions should be
asked:
l
Can one person lift this load safely, or is it a two
-
person lift?
l
How far will the load have to be carried?
l
Is the path clear of clutter, cords, slippery areas, overhangs, stairs, curbs
or uneven surfaces?
l
Will closed doors be encountered that need to be opened?
l
Once the load is lifted, will it block the carrier
’
s view?
l
Can the load be broken down into smaller parts?
l
Should the carrier wear gloves to get a better grip and protect hands?
