Cleaning and maintenance
The more the winch is used, the more frequent it will be its maintenance and cleaning:
environmental conditions and use influence the usury of the components of the winch and directly
the maintenance and cleaning frequency by the user.
Winch must be frequently washed with fresh water, at least after each use.
Winches must be subject to careful maintenance at the beginning and end of every sailing season.
Complete maintenance, cleaning and lubrication must be performed every 12 months.
In particularl
y severe applications, check the greasing of the gears at the end of each day’s racing.
Cleans the drum grip with a high-pressure hose to eliminate any threads from lines and traces of oil
or other slippery substances that could reduce the grip of the turns on the drum. Make sure that the
holes and drainage channels in the base of the winch are not obstructed so that water does not
collect.
WARNING!
Do not use solvents, polish or abrasive pastes on logos and stickers of the Winch
Harken.
Do not use polishes or abrasive pastes on anodised, chromed plated or plastic surfaces.
Do not allow teak cleaning products or other cleaning substances containing caustic
solutions to come into contact with the winch and in particular with anodized or plastic
winch parts.

Use a soft cloth for all cleaning and polishing operations.
Do not use abrasive cloths on any component.
WARNING!
Do not replace or modify any part of the winch with a part that is not original.
Lack of adequate maintenance shortens the life of the winch and may cause serious
accidents and invalidate the winch warranty.
NOTE!
Once the winch is completely disassembled (refer to the ‘Disassembly procedure’
chapter of this manual), clean the parts with a degreasing that does not leave residues,
proper to clean metal components; rinse plastic parts in fresh water. Once you have
done this, dry the parts with cloths that do not leave residue.
Inspect gears, bearings, pins and pawls for any signs of wear or corrosion.
Carefully check the teeth of gears and ring gears to make sure there are no traces of
wear.
Check the roller bearings and check there are no breaks in the bearing cages.
Replace worn or damaged components.
Lightly lubricate the pawls and springs with oil. Do not use grease on the pawls!
