The total hardness of the water is the sum of the concentrations of cal-
cium ions and magnesium ions.
Note:
In nature, calcium and magnesium ions exist side by side, e. g. in
the mineral dolomite.

Starting from hardness range “hard”, it is advisable to soften the water
for usage. Additional measures may be necessary depending on the
original quality of the water and its intended use.
