SECTION 7: SERVICE
Troubleshooting
Motor & Electrical
Symptom
Possible Cause
Possible Solution
Machine does
not start, or
power supply
breaker
immediately
trips after
startup.
1. Incorrect power supply voltage or circuit size.
2. Power supply circuit breaker tripped or fuse
blown.
3. Motor wires connected incorrectly.
4. Start capacitor at fault.
5. Contactor not energized/at fault.
6. Centrifugal switch/contact points at fault.
7. Wiring broken, disconnected, or corroded.
8. ON/OFF switch at fault.
9. Motor or motor bearings at fault.
1. Ensure correct power supply voltage and circuit size.
2. Ensure circuit is free of shorts. Reset circuit breaker or
replace fuse.
3. Correct motor wiring connections (
Page 36).
4. Test/replace if at fault.
5. Test all legs for power; repair/replace if at fault.
6. Adjust centrifugal switch/clean contact points. Replace
either if at fault.
7. Fix broken wires or disconnected/corroded
connections (
Page 36).
8. Replace switch.
9. Replace motor.
Machine
stalls or is
underpowered.
1. Workpiece material is unsuitable for machine.
2. V-belt slipping/pulley misaligned.
3. Motor wires connected incorrectly.
4. Pulley(s) slipping on shaft(s).
5. Machine undersized for task.
6. Run capacitor at fault.
7. Extension cord too long.
8. Contactor not energized/at fault.
9. Centrifugal switch/contact points at fault.
10. Motor or motor bearings at fault.
1. Only sand wood/ensure moisture is below 20%.
2. Clean/replace belt (
Page 27); ensure pulleys are
aligned.
3. Correct motor wiring connections (
Page 36).
4. Tighten/replace loose pulley/shaft.
5. Clean (
Page 24)/replace sandpaper (Page 20); reduce
workpiece pressure against belt.
6. Test/repair/replace.
7. Move machine closer to power supply; use shorter
extension cord.
8. Test all legs for power; repair/replace if at fault.
9. Adjust centrifugal switch/clean contact points. Replace
either if at fault.
10. Replace motor.
Machine has
vibration or
noisy operation.
1. Sanding belt not tensioned correctly.
2. Motor or component loose.
3. Broken/defective sanding belt.
4. V-belt worn, loose, pulleys misaligned, or belt
slapping cover.
5. Pulley loose.
6. Motor mount loose/broken.
7. Motor fan rubbing on fan cover.
8. Centrifugal switch.
9. Motor bearings at fault.
1. Correctly tension sanding belt (
Page 21).
2. Replace damaged or missing bolts/nuts or tighten if
loose.
3. Replace sanding belt (
Page 20).
4. Inspect/replace belt (
Page 27). Realign pulleys if
necessary.
5. Secure pulley on shaft.
6. Tighten/replace.
7. Fix/replace fan cover; replace loose/damaged fan.
8. Adjust centrifugal switch. Replace if at fault.
