7-4 FOLDING THE WINGS AND REMOVING THE STABILIZER
7-4.1 F
OLDING THE
W
INGS
CAUTION
When the wind speed is above about 5 m.p.h., position the
airplane’s tail into the wind when folding the wings; the wings’
rotation will then be much easier to control. Be aware also
that, when the wings are pointed into a strong wind, they are
trying to lift the airplane. Removing the spar pins in such
conditions will be more difficult; if the pins are successfully
removed, however, damage to the fuselage cage and/or the
wings could result.
To fold the wings for storage or trailering, follow these steps:
1. Chock the main wheels fore and aft so that forces exerted to fold
the wings do not move the airplane.
2. When the wings are folded, the fuel tank vent line inlets are well
below the tops of the tanks, so plug the vent lines to prevent fuel
from overflowing.
3. Remove the top-deck hatches to provide space for the inboard
ends of the flaps.
4. Install the support struts between the eye bolts at the forward spar
roots and the bases of the wing struts (optional, but
recommended).
