ASSIGNING MIDI CHANNELS
The MIDI channel configurations of the Perform-
ances of all Songs, Song/Styles, Styles and Per-
formances are freely programmable.
The procedure for channel assignments is ex-
plained on page XX of the section entitled «Edit
MIDI» of the EDIT PERFORMANCE chapter 13
(Reference Guide).
All Performances are independently programma-
ble for MIDI assignments and any change can
be saved with Store Perf. See the Edit Perform-
ance chapter for details.
MIDI CONNECTION RULES
Brief instructions on MIDI connections are on
page 7 of the Basic concepts Chapter 3. To re-
cap:
•
An instrument which pilots another instrument
is called the
master, while an instrument that
is piloted by a controlling device is called the
slave.
•
The MIDI OUT of the master instrument is
connected to the MIDI IN of the slave instru-
ment.
•
To programme Songs on an external
sequencer, the MIDI OUT of WK3 is con-
nected to the MIDI IN of the sequencer; the
MIDI OUT of the sequencer is connected to
the MIDI IN of WK3.
•
Do not connect the same MIDI port between
two instruments.
When you connect external MIDI devices, the
corresponding tracks must be tuned to the same
MIDI channels as the WK3 tracks. Some exam-
ples follow, with WK3 programmed as shown in
the previous table:
•
If WK3 controls an expander with one track
only (Upper 1 - track 8) across the entire key-
board range, the expander must be pro-
grammed to receive on MIDI channel 8.
•
If WK3 controls a multi-timbral expander, the
instrumental parts of the expander must be
tuned to the same channels as the WK3 con-
trolling parts (or tracks). Assign channel 1O
to the drum track, channel 9 to the Bass......
•
If WK3 is controlled by an external control-
ling device, you must programme the parts
(tracks) of the controlling device to the same
channels as the WK3 parts (tracks), or pro-
gramme the WK3 tracks accordingly to react
with the master.

- The Common Channel is a special channel pro-
grammed to receive general control data and distributed
to all other channels (example: effects changes, sustain
pedal activation in a master keyboard, the notes played
on a master keyboard, etc.). The Common channel can
be any MIDI channel and it is programmed in «Edit
MIDI», Common/Chord» page.
