SuperPro Series Installation Manual
discontinuous signal.
Distribution
Panel
The central control signal distribution/control point.
Download
The process of loading software into the nodes of a network from one node or device
over the network media. Also refers to bringing information from an On-line service to
your computer.
Downstream
Outside signal sources being input into a home.
DTMF
Dual Tone Multi-Frequency commonly used in touch-tone telephones.
Duplex Fiber
A two-fiber cable suitable for two-way transmission.
Echelon
Electronic communications Protocol and Neuron Chip designed for control of devices
within industrial, commercial and home use. Presently used mostly in industrial
applications.
EIA/TIA 568A
Wiring standard developed by the Electrical Industry Association and the
Telecommunications Industry Association. This is the color wiring standard used for
FutureProof™ cable termination.
Electronic
Architect
See also Systems Integrator. Architects specify the physical placement of electronics
so as to achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment.
EM Energy
Electromagnetic radiant energy that travels through space.
i.e. radio, TV and light waves.
EMI
Electromagnetic Interference - Any electromagnetic energy that causes undesirable
response, degradation, or failure in electronic equipment. Optical fibers neither emit nor
receive EMI.
Ethernet
A Baseband Local Area Network (LAN) developed jointly by Xerox, Digital, and Intel to
interconnect computer equipment using coaxial cable and “Transceivers”. Designed for
a 10 or 100 Mbps LAN.
Fiber Optics
Light transmission through a strand of glass for communication or signaling.
Fiber Channel
High Speed Network Protocol; 100, 200, 400, 800 Mbit/s available today 1-2 Gbit/s
specified. Uses Optical fiber, coax, and STP. Can travel up to 10 KM over fiber.
FOBus
CEBus acronym for the Fiber Optic Bus.
Frequency
The rate at which the energy of a signal changes.
Frequency
Modulation
A method of information transmission in which the carrier frequency varies in
accordance with the information signal.
Fusion Splicing A permanent joint accomplished by the application of localized heat sufficient to fuse
the ends of the optical fiber, forming a continuous single fiber.
Future
Proofing™
Preparing an environment capable of handling new technologies for the next 10 to 15
years.
FutureProof™
To design and install systems that will extend the life of an environment beyond the
normal or current vision, offering protection from obsolescence.
Gateway
A special node that interfaces two or more dissimilar networks, providing protocol
translation between the networks.
Ghost
A shadowy or weak image in the received picture, offset either to the right or to the left
of the primary image. It is the result of transmission conditions where secondary signals
are created and received earlier or later than the primary signal.
HABITECH
Home Automation Trade Show sponsored by Parks & Associates
HDTV
High Definition Television.
HLAN
Home Local Area Network.
