Glossary
10BaseF
Operates over fiber on a star topology with a physical central hub acting as the network
distribution point. Each node or workstation on the network is connected to the hub.
10BaseT
IEEE standard for 10 Mbps Ethernet over Twisted pair to a maximum distance of 100
meters.
110 Punch
Down Tool
Tool used to press 24 Ga. copper wires into 110 blocks on back of CAT5e connectors.
A/D
(Analog/Digital)
An integrated circuit device that converts analog signals – such as varying levels of
heat to cold, quiet to loud, dim to bright, increased to decreased flow, etc. – to digital
signals.
Access Point
A point that permits access to a LAN or WAN network. Our Receptacle plate provides
access points for the network.
Address
1. The location of a workstation, a peripheral device, a node or any other unit of
component in a network. 2. Internet E-mail address. Physical or virtual address where
information is stored for Addressee.
ADSI
Open architecture technology that makes screen-based transactions possible from the
phone. Transmission of both voice and text.
ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode - Able to transfer Network information at speeds between

Attenuation
Decrease in magnitude of the signal level.
Bandwidth
The range of frequencies that can be transmitted with the desired signal quality.
Baseband
A method of communication in which a signal is transmitted at its original frequency
without being impressed on a higher frequency carrier signal.
Bit
A binary digit, the smallest element of information in the binary system, a 1 or 0 of
binary data.
Bridge
Connection point between two network media, i.e., RF (Radio Frequency) to twisted
pair, fiber optic to coax, IR (infrared) to RF, etc.
Broadband
The method of communication in which a lower frequency signal is modulated onto a
higher frequency carrier signal. In data transmission, it denotes transmission facilities
capable of handling frequencies greater than those required for high-grade voice
communications.
Bus Network
A network topology in which all terminals are attached to a transmission medium
serving as a common connection point (daisy chain).
Byte
A unit of 8 bits (digital data).
Cable
An assembly of optical fibers or copper wires and other material providing mechanical
and environmental protection.
Cable Loss
The amount of RF signal attenuated by coaxial cable transmission. The cable
attenuation is a function of frequency, media type, and cable distance.
CAT5
Twisted Pair Cable rated for 100Mbps Speed transmission
CAT5e
Twisted Pair Cable that is rated at 100Mbps, but is swept or tested at 350Mbps.
CAT6
Twisted Pair Cable that will be rated at 250Mbps.
CATV
Community Antenna Television.
CCTV
The common abbreviation for closed-circuit television.
