IN-VEHICLE SERVICE (Continued}
Installation
1 . With the timing chain vibration damper in the
compressed position, install the timing chain
vibration damper and retaining bolts to front of
cylinder blocks. lighten retaining bolts to 8- 14
N·m (7 1 - 1 23 1b-in).

Rotate crankshaft (6303) as necessary to
position No. 1 piston (6 1 08) at top dead center
(TDC) and keyway at the 12 o'clock position.
Lubricate timing chain with clean engine oil
meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C 153-F.
Install camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket
and timing chain at the same time. Make sure
timing marks line up across from each other.

4. Install distributor drive gear.
5.
Install retaining bolt and washer at end of
camshaft. lighten to 4Q-50 N·m (30-36 lb-ft).
6.
Remove timing chain vibration damper retaining
pin.
7.
Install engine front cover as described.
Camshaft
Removal
1 . Remove radiator (8005). Refer to Section 03-Q3.
2. If vehicle is equipped with air conditioning,
remove A
I
C condenser core ( 197 1 2). Refer to
Section 1 2-Q3A.
3.
Remove radiator grille (8200). Refer to Section
01-Q2.
4.
Remove camshaft position sensor (CMP
sensor)( 1 2 1 26) and housing as described in
Section 03- 1 4.
5.
Remove upper intake manifold (9424) and lower
intake manifold as described.
6.
Remove valve tappet (6500), valve tappet guide
plate (6K5 12) and tappet guide plate and retainer
(6K564) as described.
7. Remove engine front cover (60 19), timing chain
and camshaft sprocket spacer (6265) as
described.
8.
Remove oil pan (6675) as described.
9.
Remove camshaft thrust plate (6269).
10. Remove camshaft (6250) through the front of the
engine, being careful not to damage camshaft
bearing surfaces and lobes.
Installation
1 . NOTE: Lightly oil retaining bolt and stud threads
before installation except those specifying
special sealant.
NOTE: Inspect camshaft rear bearing cover
(6266) for damage or leakage. Replace or reseal
if necessary (engine removed).
Lubricate the camshaft lobes and bearing
surfaces with Engine Assembly Lubricant
D9AZ-1 9579-D or equivalent meeting Ford
specification ESR-M99C8Q-A.
2. Install camshaft.
Be
careful not to damage
bearing surfaces and lobes while sliding into
position.
3.
Install camshaft thrust plate. lighten bolts to 8-14
N·m (7 1 - 1 23 1b-in).
4.
Install camshaft sprocket spacer, timing chain
and engine front cover as described.
5. Install oil pan as described.
6.
Install valve tappet, valve tappet guide plate and
tappet guide plate and retainer as described.
7.
Install lower intake manifold and upper intake
manifold as described.
8.
Install camshaft position sensor and housing as
described in Section 03-1 4.
9.
Install radiator grille. Refer to Section 0 1 -02.
