1.2.5 Work on diesel engine and peripherals
Parts that have moved with the protective grill removed
WARNING: Serious injury caused by moving parts with side panels removed
Working with side panels removed can cause crushing and cutting injuries by being
drawn into moving parts.
During the entire process of working with side panels removed, ensure that there is no
one in the cab.
When performing mechanical work on the engine, remove the ignition key and disconnect
the battery.
Once the work is complete, refit the side panels.
Escaping high-pressure jet - common rail diesel injection systems
WARNING: High-pressure injection-
related injury caused by an escaping
high-pressure jet of diesel
Fuel system components can be
under high pressure even when the
engine is switched off. If screw
connections are opened improperly or
fuel lines are removed incorrectly,
fuel under high pressure may escape
in a jet. This can cause serious
injuries, especially to the eyes. The
high-pressure jet can also cause
serious injury to the body and limbs
and the fuel can penetrate the skin
and cause blood poisoning.
Ensure that work on the fuel system
is carried out only by appropriately-
trained maintenance personnel.
Never open screw connections on the
fuel system or remove fuel lines when
the engine is running or when the
engine is starting up.
Wait at least 5 minutes after
switching off the engine before
carrying out work on the fuel system.
Replace damaged fuel system
components.
Replace high-pressure pipes that have
been opened.
Wear personal protective equipment
when working on the fuel system.
If you are hit by a high-pressure jet,
immediately seek medical advice. The
entry point may be barely visible or
not visible at all.
