VGA2Ethernet

Playing Back a Video File

Depending on the video codec that you used, you should be able

to play back most recorded videos using Windows Media Player.

If you are playing back the video file on a computer other than the

video capture workstation, you may need to install a video codec

on that computer. See

“Installing the ffvfw Video Codec Pack” on

page 140

.

You cannot use the Epiphan VGA2Ethernet user interface to play

back video files.

Using the VirtualDub DirectShow

Applications to Record Video Files

This section describes basic steps for using the VirtualDub free

DirectShow application to capture images from a VGA2Ethernet

device and record the captured images as video files. This is not a

detailed description. You can apply these instructions to any

third-party interface that can get images from DirectShow. For

more information about DirectShow, se

“Configuring

DirectShow Options” on page 99

.

VirtualDub records *.avi video files. You can download and

install VirtualDub from

http://www.virtualdub.org/

.

VGA2Ethernet devices communicate with applications such as

VirtualDub or GraphEdit using the DirectShow API. Any
DirectShow-compatible image capture application installed on a

video capture workstation that is connected to a VGA2Ethernet

device can receive captured images from the device.
To use a DirectShow-compatible capture application to capture

images from a VGA2Ethernet device, you must use the capture

application to find the device. To find the device, you must install

the VGA2Ethernet driver and application on the video capture

workstation. Then you must run the Network Discovery Utility

and add the VGA2Ethernet device to the list. When you use the

DirectShow application to record captured images, you select the

name of the VGA2Ethernet device as it appears in the Network

Discovery Utility.
