EDI-53 Series Digital Indicator
Page
| 2
The remaining pair of red and black leads terminated with red and black coded clips are not used in
this indicator. In the standard EDI-53 indicator these provide the bridge excitation voltage that is not
required for quarter bridge measurement. These leads are also not connected internally in the
indicator.
As the input signal cable is a standard EDI-53 indicator cable it can be used with any other version of
EDI-53 as a replacement.

PREPARING SETUP DATA
1.
Units
– Choose the blank option as the symbol for micro strain (
µε
) is not available in the
indicator (i.e. select key ‘6’ when prompted for the units value).
2.
Initial Reading or Coefficient C
– Enter the value of the initial value of the strain gage
measured in Volts. After installation of the strain gage, measure its value in Volts in ‘VOLTS’
mode. This value will serve as the zero reference value for all subsequent measurements, i.e.
this zero value is subtracted from all subsequent measured values to get the actual change in
strain.
3.
Gauge Factor or Coefficient B
– Enter the value (8000
÷
G), where G is the gage factor of
the strain gage to be measured, as supplied by its manufacturer.
4.
Coefficient A
– This value should be left at 0.0000E+00 as polynomial calculation
coefficients are not generally provided by the foil resistance strain gage manufacturers.
However, if available the coefficient of x
2
can be entered for better accuracy.
5.
Decimal point ‘DP’
– This value should be kept at 0

TEST MODE OPERATION
ADC Check (or recalibration) – Key press ‘3’
The following procedure should be used to check or recalibrate the EDI-53S-350 indicator.
The EDI-53S-350 requires a precision resistance box in which the resistance can be varied in steps of
at least 0.01 Ohms. The resistors should have an accuracy of at least 0.01% of value.
Program one of the transducer channels for ‘Units’ = blank, ‘Initial reading’ = 0.000, ‘Gage Factor’ =
4000 and ‘DP’ = 0. Select the programmed transducer channel in units mode.
Connect the input signal leads to the decade resistance box output terminals. The ‘zero’ and ‘span’
readings should be as follows:
Input : 350 Ohms
Display : (Note down the reading on display, say Z)
Input : 352.10 Ohms
Display : (3000 + Z)
