Chapter 3: The ELAN Network
Introduction
The ELAN Network consists of the VIA!2-8.4 Wireless 8.4” Color LCD
Touch Panel, VIA!2-SS1 System Station, a router and a wireless access
point (WAP).
VIA2-SS1 System Station
The VIA!2-SS1 System Station is an RS-232, IR, Sense and Relay control-
ler all rolled into one. It is also the companion component to the VIA!2-8.4
Wireless Touch Panel, translating the wireless panel's 8.02.11b/g WiFi
commands into actions that can control just about every aspect of a
Home Theater or a zone in an ELAN multi-room system. Future software /
feature-set enhancements to the VIA!2-SS1 Wireless Touch Panel are all
field-upgradeable through VIA!TOOLS setup software.
Initial Release Notes:
• A VIA!2-SS1 is required for each VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel.
• 1-way serial drivers for local control of RS-232 subsystems can be
loaded directly into the SS1.
• Feedback from and control of 2-way serial drivers requires
interconnection to a VIA!-SC4 System Controller.
Router
A router is a computer networking device that forwards data to its proper
destination and connects two or more networks together. Routers typi-
cally connect home networks to the Internet.
Wireless Access Point
The VIA!2-8.4 Wireless 8.4” Color LCD Touch Panel requires a wireless
access point. The wireless access point (WAP) is a device that “connects”
the VIA!2-8.4 Wireless Touch Panel together with the VIA!2-SS1 System
Station to create a wireless control system. The WAP is connected directly
to the router via ethernet, and relays data between the VIA!2-8.4 and the
VIA!2-SS1. Visit the ELAN website for recommended wireless access
points.
NOTE: 802.11b/g standards use the unlicensed 2.4 gigahertz
(GHz) band. Operating in an unregulated frequency
band, 802.11b and 802.11g equipment can incur
interference from microwave ovens, cordless phones,
and other appliances using the same 2.4 GHz band.
