Testing the spark strength
DANGER!
Electric shock
Danger of serious injury resulting in death
¨
Never hold cables, spark plug connectors and spark plugs in your hand
when actuating the starter.
DANGER!
Highly flammable substances
Fire and explosion hazard
When testing the spark strength, make sure that there are no petrol vapours in
the effective range of the sparks.
¨
Pull the cable of the spark plug connector part way out of the housing and insert the
spark plug into the spark plug connector.
¨
Lock the spark plug connector and spark plug so that the electrodes of the spark plug
face away from the genset. There must not be any petrol vapours nearby; remove
canisters, cleaning cloths etc. that might contain such vapours.
¨
Do not touch cables, spark plug connectors and spark plugs while actuating the starter.
¨
Actuate the recoil starter by slowly pulling the starter handle away from the genset.
¨
Observe the spark formation when doing this:
– The spark plug is in order if uniform sparks are produced while you are pulling out the
pull cable.
– The spark plug must be replaced if sparks are produced only sporadically.
Installing the spark plug
¨
Put in the spark plug carefully by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten the spark plug
hand-tight.
¨
Use the spark plug spanner to firmly tighten the spark plug that has been screwed in
manually. When doing so, bear in mind the following difference:
– Used spark plug: Tighten this by turning the spark plug spanner through
approximately another half a turn.
– New spark plug: Screw this tight by turning the spark plug spanner through a
maximum of approximately one quarter of a turn.
¨
Place the spark plug spanner securely onto the spark plug and close the side housing
cover and the rubber tab.
