Using the PCR-A30 as a MIDI keyboard
●
PLAY mode
When you power up the PCR-A30, it will start up in PLAY mode.
In PLAY mode, playing the keyboard will transmit note messages to play the connected MIDI device.
The display will show the
current channel
In PLAY mode, you can play the keyboard to produce sound on a connected sound module, and also
use various other functions, such as operating the bender lever to change the pitch of the currently
sounding note (Pitch Bend), adding vibrato (Modulation), or switching the octave (Octave Shift).
Features Useful When Playing

Hold 1(CC#64) must be assigned to p1 (p. 59).

Expression (CC#11) must be assigned to p2 (p. 59).

While playing the keyboard, move the lever to the left to lower the pitch of the currently selected
patch, or to the right to raise its pitch. This is known as
pitch bend
. You can also apply vibrato by
gently pushing the lever away from you. THis is known as
modulation
.
If you push the lever away from you and the same time move it to the right or left, you can apply
both effects at once.
To switch the PCR-A30 to PLAY mode...
The PCR-A30 will automatically start up in PLAY mode when you turn on the power.
To return to PLAY mode from another mode (
button of the current mode (i.e., the button that is lit).
Alternatively, you can press the
[CANCEL]
button. In this case, the setting you had been making
will be cancelled.
Applying Pitch Changes
to Notes
Pitch Bend
Move the
BENDER Lever
(left or right) to transmit

messages, and
apply subtle pitch changes to notes.
* The Pitch Bend range varies depending on how it is set on the sound module.
Modifying the Sound of
Notes
Modulation
Moving the
BENDER Lever
(up or down) will transmit
Modulation
messages,
changing the sound in real time (usually by adding a vibrato effect).
* The change obtained with this massage will very depending on the setting for your
sound module (the section which handles modulation), or the Tone selected.
Adding a Sustain Effect to
Notes
Hold
If a
pedal switch
or
foot switch
(one from the DP series or BOSS FS-5U; sold
separately) is connected to the rear panel HOLD jack, you can press the foot
switch to make notes continue sounding even after you remove your hand from
the keyboard (the Hold function). This will transmit the MIDI message Hold 1
(CC#64). The Hold On message (data 127) is transmitted when you press the
pedal, and Hold Off (data 0) when you release the pedal. (

Controlling the Volume or
Timbre of the Sound
Expression
If an
expression pedal
(EV-5; sold separately) is connected to the rear panel
EXPRESSION jack, you can use the pedal to control the volume or tone. (

Changing Octaves
Octave Shift
You can press
[OCTAVE -]
or
[]
to raise or lower the pitch range of
the keyboard (the Octave Shift function). This lets you play a wider range of
notes than would normally be accessible from the 32 keys.
Press
[OCTAVE -]
once to lower the pitch range one octave. Press it once again
to lower the range an additional octave. Permissible settings for this range from
-4 to 5 octaves.

, the Octave Shift
setting will be reset to 0, restoring the normal pitch range of the keyboard.
Transpose the Pitch of the
Keyboard

transpose the keyboard in semitone steps (the Transpose function).
You can transpose the pitch in a range of -12–12 (semitones).
* If you press and hold
