REAR AXLE
Repair and Service Manual
Read all of Section B and this section before attempting any procedure. Pay particular attention to all Notices, Cautions, Dangers and Warnings.
Remove the four wires connected to the motor. Remove
the vinyl cap (1), hex nut (2), washer (3), bushing shock
absorber(4) securing the bottom of the shock absorber
(7) and compress the shock absorber (Ref Fig. 3) .
Being careful to prevent the axle assembly (3) from
rotating, remove the hex bolt (8), washer (9) securing
with the mounting plate (12), lift bracket (14), washer (6)
and hex nut (5).
Remove hex bolt (10) and hex nut (11) securing the
springs (13) to the shackles at the rear of the vehicle.
Allow rear of springs to rest on floor.
The rear axle and motor assembly can now be lifted off
the jack stands and lowered to rest the tires on the floor.
Roll the axle and motor assembly out from under vehi-
cle.

Installation is in the reverse order of disassembly.
Tighten rear spring mounting hex bolt (10) and hex nut
to 21 - 25 ft. lbs. (28 - 34 Nm) torque. Tighten axle
mounting hardware (4) to 16 - 20 ft. lbs. (22 - 27 Nm)
torque.
Reconnect the motor wires to motor (Refer to MOTOR
section). Tighten motor terminal hardware to 66 in. lbs.
(8 Nm) torque.
Reattach “T” to axle, secure with lock nut and reconnect
brake lines to “T”. Torque nuts to values shown in Figure
2.
Bleed the hydraulic brake system per BRAKES section.
Bleeding the hydraulic brakes is mandatory.
AXLE SHAFT DISASSEMBLY
The rear axle is a precision assembly, and therefore any
repair or replacement of parts must be done with extreme
care in a clean environment. Before attempting to perform
any service on the axle, read and understand all of the
following text and illustrations before disassembling the
unit.
Handle all splines with extreme care.
To reduce the possibility of personal injury, fol-
low the lifting procedure in the SAFETY section
of this manual. Place wheel chocks in front and
behind the front wheels and check the stability
of the vehicle on the jack stands before starting
any repair procedure. Never work on a vehicle
that is supported by a jack alone.

Loosen rear wheel lug nuts on the side of vehicle to be
serviced. Lift side of vehicle according to lifting proce-
dure in SAFETY section. Remove wheel and brake drum
(Ref Fig. 4) (refer to BRAKES section).
Disconnect hydraulic brake line from the wheel cylinder.
