WARNING: This product is intended for use by dental professionals only.  Before operating
handpiece, carefully read and follow these instructions and save them for future reference.
Observe all cautions and warnings, including:

• Handpieces should be heat-sterilized between patients to prevent cross-contamination which

could result in serious illness or even death from infectious organisms such as HIV (the virus
that causes AIDS) or hepatitis B.

• It is the responsibility of the Dental Healthcare Professional to determine the appropriate use

of this product and to understand the health of each patient, the dental procedures being
undertaken and industry and governmental agency regulations, recommendations and
requirements for  safe practice of dentistry.

• Do not cut with the handpiece unless you are sure the bur is secure.  Do not extend the bur

outward from the handpiece head.  A loose or extended bur could eject from the head or break
and cause personal injury.

• Do not use this handpiece within the oral cavity when a soft tissue wound is present.

Air pressure may force septic materials into these tissues.

• Midwest turbines should not be rebuilt.  Replacing bearings only could result in unexpected

failure and patient injury due to different wear factors of new vs. old components.

None Known.

Installation

Checking Handpiece Hose

Make sure all tubings supplying the handpiece hose are properly connected within the dental unit.
Be sure the air and water are delivered to the handpiece as shown in the illustration below.

Air Requirements

The handpiece delivers designed speed and torque when operated with clean, filtered, moisture-free air at the
recommended operating pressure of

30 p.s.i. (2.0 Atm.)

.  Air pressure should be measured at the handpiece

end of the hose.

Water Supply Recommendations

It is highly recommended that all dental water supply systems conform to applicable CDC (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention) and ADA (American Dental Association) standards, and that all recommendations be
followed in terms of flushing, chemical flushing and general infection control procedures.

Scrub and Rinse

Scrub and rinse under warm tap water.  Make sure fiber optic bundles are scrubbed well.

Expel Cleaner and Dry

Run handpiece on Midwest Handpiece Air Station (REF 380800) or other air source for 30 seconds or until
handpiece reaches normal speed, and all excess cleaner is expelled. Handpieces with bur tool chucking system
(Tradition REF 750045/750044 or Quiet-air REF 730014/464004) should always be covered with a Spray Guard
or have a bur installed before running.  Dry thoroughly.

Lubricate and Expel

1. Lubricate by placing 3 drops of Midwest Plus Handpiece Lubricant (REF 380130) into drive air tube (shorter

of two larger tubes).

2. Run handpiece for 30 seconds or until it reaches normal speed, and until all excess lubricant is expelled.

Wipe off any excess lubricant on outside of handpiece with a dry gauze pad or tissue.

Maintenance Using
Midwest Plus

Aerosol Spray

Scrub and Rinse

Remove bur. Scrub and rinse under warm tap water. Make sure fiber optic bundles are scrubbed well.

Clean, Lubricate and Expel

Clean and lubricate with one quick spray of Midwest Plus™ Aerosol Spray (REF 380080) using the Midwest
Backend Attachment nozzle (REF 380086) into the drive air tube of the handpiece. The drive air tube is the
shorter of the two larger tubes and is gold on many handpieces. Run the handpiece on Midwest Handpiece Air
Station or other air source for 30 seconds or until normal speed is reached, and all excess spray is expelled.
This handpiece with a bur type chucking system should always be covered with a Midwest Spray Guard or have
a bur installed before running. Dry thoroughly.

Bag • Autoclave

Insert handpiece into sterilization bag and load into autoclave.  (DENTSPLY recommends using sterilization bags
with at least one paper side.)  Handpieces should be processed in an autoclave set for a minimum of 15
minutes at sterilization temperature

(132ºC/270ºF)

.

For cassette chamber saturated steam devices, handpieces should be processed unbagged for a
minimum of 3.5 minutes at sterilization temperature

(135ºC/275ºF)

.

Keep handpiece in bag until ready to use in the operatory. No relubrication is necessary.
