WARNING !
This notice must be translated (eventually), by the retailer, into the language of the country of use.
For your safety, comply strictly with the instructions for use, verification, maintenance and storage.
FROMENT cannot be held liable for any direct or indirect accident occurring as a result of use other than provided for in this notice; do not use this equipment beyond its capabilities!
GENERAL FEATURES:
The ASCAB 3 is an opening type sliding stainless steel fall protection of French design. It is used on a galvanized or stainless steel cable 8mm in diameter from the Froment® brand, tight
or flexible, and ensures the vertical movement of the user.
It is fully automatic, includes an integrated shock absorber and a fail-safe prohibiting it from reversing its mounting direction on the cable.
The device is simple, robust, and requires no special maintenance.
The user's safety depends on the continuing effectiveness of the equipment and the proper understanding of the operating instructions outlined in this leaflet.
LABELLING:
- the manufacturer’s logo: FROMENT
- the year of manufacture, example 11 417200 for year 2011
- the model identification, example: Ascab3
-the indication of compliance with the directive 89/686/CEE (CE)
- the serial number, e.g. 11 417200
- the N° of the standard to which the product is compliant, example EN353-1 (VG11
- the N° of the notified body involved in the control of the European equipment (0333)
11.073: sheet relating to additional tests) / EN353-2

usable cable references.
- the maximum weight admissible
Plus one pictogram indicating: Read the instructions before use.
On the cable, you will find:
The marking CE0333, the manufacturer's identification: FROMENT, identification of model, serial number, the standard to which the product complies, the length, the symbol of the
record.
Near the belay support you will find a sign with information on the maximum number of users, and the type of fall-arrest device appropriate to the belay support.
The legibility of markings should be checked periodically.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
Opening the device is simple: just depress the locking plate, pull out the side button and swing the arm away from the body. The cable can then be run through the main body of the
ASCAB 3. Close the device by pushing the arm back into the body. Check that the ASCAB 3 is closed securely by listening for the click as the locking plate engages and checking that
the end of the shaft is fully home. The ASCAB 3 connects to the harness with a snap hook attached to the shock absorber.
When in use, the cable slides through the channel, which is fitted with a roller for smooth, easy movement. In the event of a fall, the arm (which has a cam-shaped end) traps the cable and
checks the fall. The shock absorber is deployed, absorbing the energy of the fall. The ASCAB 3 is a versatile device, responding to all situations where the use of an Ø8mm Froment®
cable galvanized or stainless steel, tight or flexible, is required. Its simple design and tough construction are greatly appreciated by pylon workers and other users working overhead For
the installation of the belay support on the pylon see the specific instructions "
ASCAB Anchoring System
"
UPDATE 09/2011. The use of an energy absorber on the belay support is not
necessary.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
: The device is entirely in stainless steel and has a polyamide strap energy sink.
PRECAUTIONS:
. The user must open or manipulate the device only when the risk of falling is eliminated. Touching the sliding fall arrest during ascending or descending movements may prevent proper
operation of the brake mechanism.
. The ASCAB 3 is not a maintenance system at work: use a maintenance system at work separate from this device.
. The ASCAB 3 must be connected above the sternum by the sternal attachment point of the harness. The harness must be correctly adjusted using the control gauge in such a way that it is
close to the body.
. For safety reasons and before each use, ensure that in the case of a fall, the free space under the user's feet is sufficient to avoid a ground collision and that no obstacle is present in the
path of the fall.
. Take the extra precautions necessary in the ascents and descents under a height of less than 2 m above the low parts as there is a risk of touching the ground before total braking of the
device. Indeed, with a mass of 100kg and a fall factor situation no. 2, the minimum distance required beneath the feet is 2m.
. It is recommended to assign an ASCAB 3 fall arrest system to each user. The device can be used by only one person at a time. The weight of the user including their clothing and
equipment must not exceed the maximum weight shown on the fall arrest system. This equipment should be used only by trained, competent and healthy persons, or under the supervision
of a trained and competent person.
Warning! Some medical conditions may affect the safety of the user, if in doubt contact your doctor.
. Before and during use, we recommend that you make the necessary provisions for a possible rescue in complete safety.
. Check before every use that the locking system is operational and that the shock absorber is not torn. If in doubt, on the state of the device (traces of oxidation) or after a fall
(deformation), it should not be reused and/ or be returned to the manufacturer or to a competent person, authorized by them.
. Sharp edges, structures of narrow diameter and corrosion are to be banned as they can affect the strength of the cable.
. It is forbidden to remove, add or replace any component of the fall arrest system formed by the device and its belay support without the agreement of the manufacturer.
. The horizontal distance between the belay support and the connector intended to be hung on the fall arrest harness is 380mm. It is prohibited to increase or decrease this horizontal
distance, and add, remove, replace a connecting element.
Temperature: the ASCAB3 must be used at temperatures above -30 ° C.
Chemical products: turn off the device in case of contact with chemical products, solvents or fuels that could affect its operation
VERIFICATION:
The lifetime of the product is of 5-10 years but can be increased or decreased depending on the use and/ or the results of annual audits. The system (cable and fall arrest) must be routinely
checked in case of doubt, of falls and at least every twelve months by the manufacturer or a competent person, appointed by them, to ensure its strength and therefore the safety of the
user.
USAGE COMPATIBILITY:
The ASCAB 3 is used with a fall arrest system as defined in the description sheet (see standard EN363). A fall arrest harness (EN361) is the only body harness device that is permitted for
use. It can be dangerous to create your own fall arrest system in which each safety function may interfere with another safety function. Therefore, before all use, consult the
recommendations for use for each system component. The fact sheet should be completed after each annual audit of the product.
MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE:
(Instructions to be strictly adhered)
During transport, keep the ASCAB 3 away from all sharp objects and store it in its packaging. Clean with water, wipe with a cloth and hang in a ventilated room to dry naturally and away
from any direct fire or source of heat, even for items that have been exposed to moisture during use. The device should be stored in a moderate, dry and aired place in its packaging.
