they are accustomed to: trying to push the WheelChair Mover forward or to stop it by
pulling back on the WheelChair Mover.) Only the use of the throttle lever will move and
stop the machine.
Finally, swi
tch from the “rabbit” speed to the “turtle” speed. (Page 21 of the Owners
Manual) The throttle lever will perform in the same manner as described above.
However,
the top speed and the acceleration in “rabbit” are overall faster than the
slower top speed and acceleration when the switch is in the “turtle” position.
Practice Driving the Machine
It is now time to have them practice driving the machine using the knowledge that you
have taught above. Have them do the following:
Switch to “turtle” speed. First, drive the machine with a wheelchair already attached,
but without patient. Drive in forward and in reverse. Turn corners while practicing. Try
turning the machine and wheelchair in a 360-degree circle. Bring the unit up close and
stop smoothly and safely in front of obstacles or places at which they might load and
unload patients.
When there is confidence in driving the unit in “turtle” position, perform all of the same
maneuvers in “rabbit”. Remember you can still operate the machine very slowly by
depressing the throttle just a little. Also, notice that when making a turn at the faster
“rabbit” speeds you must first slow down the unit for safe control and comfort of the
patient
Perform and practice all the same maneuvers in “rabbit” and “turtle” with a “patient” who
is one of the other trainees.
Begin the process again, driving only the WheelChair Mover without an attached
wheelchair. It is important to practice this function because the machine displays
different driving characteristics without a wheelchair. Notice that the unit is now
operating on a narrow three-wheel base minus the more stable addition of the 4 wheels
of the wheelchair. Therefore,
note that the WheelChair Mover turns much quicker. You
must slow down the unit and maintain steering control when turning corners.
Back-Away Button
Avoid backing into a corner, wall or obstruction when operating the unit in reverse.
Show them the safety function of the button. (See page 26 of the Owners Manual) The
button only operates when the machine is on. Depressing the button causes the
machine to move forward and away from the operator until released.
Explain How to Connect
Now that the trainees are practiced and confident in their control of the throttle levers,
speed, acceleration, and maneuvering, they can learn how to connect and disconnect
the machine to a wheelchair. First, use an empty wheelchair. Engage the wheelchair
