Rough Running Engine

A rough running engine and / or a partial loss of power can be caused by a number of
factors, including but not limited to:
a.
incorrect mixture setting;
b.
engine driven fuel pump failure (refer to Low Fuel Pressure, Figure 3-6);
c.
fuel exhaustion;
d.
icing of the air induction system;
e.
fouled spark plugs;
f.
faulty magneto;
g.
stuck valve;
h.
loss of lubrication (refer to Low Oil Pressure, Figure 3-5); or
i.
major mechanical failure.
18.
The actions to be taken in response to a rough running engine should consider:
a.
while attempting to identify and correct the problem, it may be appropriate to
manoeuvre the aircraft so as to optimize the position for a forced landing should
the situation deteriorate;
b.
immediate actions should be taken appropriate to the symptoms indicated in
Figure 3-7 below; and
c.
if the problem cannot be identified and corrected, action should be taken to
conduct a precautionary landing as soon as possible.
