S

Part 1: General Information
1-40
Caution
■
1. When the built-in flash is used, any lens hood
must be detached.
■
2. The built-in flash’s maximum coverage suits
28mm and longer lenses. Therefore, if the lens is
shorter than 28mm, there will be light fall-off along
the periphery.
■
3. While the built-in flash is used or recycling, the
electronic focusing ring for manual focusing on
USM lenses cannot be used.
■
4. Using an external Speedlite with a Programmed
Image Control mode (except Night Scene) is not
recommended since it will not obtain the desired
effect.
■
5. Before attaching an external Speedlite to the
camera, the camera’s built-in flash must be
retracted.
■
6. In the P, Tv, Av, M, or DEP mode, the AF-assist
light will not be emitted in low light unless the
built-in flash is popped up manually.
■
7. If an external Speedlite other than SPEEDLITE
420 EX is attached and an off-center focusing
point is selected, AF-assist light might not be
emitted or it might be emitted but fails to assist
focus.
■
8. Infrared film cannot be used.
■
9. If film is loaded while the Command Dial is set to
OFF, automatic film advance to frame 1 will not
be executed.
Explanation and Remarks
An attached lens hood will obstruct part of the built-in
flash coverage.
S
Use an external flash unit.
As per the design.
S
When using the built-in flash, do not use a lens
shorter than 28mm.
S
To obtain wider flash coverage, use Speedlite
550EX or 540EZ.
As per the design.
(Power cannot be supplied to the built-in flash and
lens.)
This is because the external Speedlite will always fire
and the exposure will be controlled by the autoflash
program.
This is to prevent the external Speedlite’s AF-assist
emitter from hitting the built-in flash’s cover.
As per the design.
As per the design.
(The AF-assist beam is not linked to the seven
focusing points.)
With 550EX, 540EZ, and ST-E2:
AF will fail if the top or bottom focusing point is selected.
With other Speedlites:
AF-assist beam is not emitted when an off-center
focusing point is manually selected. (During automatic
focusing point selection, focus can be achieved only
with the center focusing point.)
The photo reflector (used to detect the film perforation)
emits infrared light which will expose infrared film.
When the Command Dial is turned to any setting
except OFF, the film advances to frame 1
automatically.
