The following procedures describe the removal and replacement of the system’s service access cover.
Before performing the following procedures, read the “Safety Notices” on page vii.
Removing the 296/C3 Service Access Cover
To remove the service access cover, do the following:
1. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the 296/C3 into the Service
2. Loosen the two captive thumbscrews located on the rear of the cover. See the following illustration for
thumbscrew locations.
3. Using the access cover handle, slide the cover toward the rear of the system drawer. After the front of
the service access cover has cleared the upper chassis ledge, lift the cover up and off the system
drawer.
Attention:
For proper cooling and airflow, replace the cover before turning on the system. Operating the
system for extended periods of time (over 30 minutes) with the cover removed might damage the system
components.

Replacing the 296/C3 Service Access Cover
To replace the service access cover, do the following:
1. Place the service access cover on the top of the system, approximately 25 mm (1 inch) from the front
of the system.
2. Hold the service access cover against the system drawer, and slide it toward the front of the system.
Ensure that the fan LED cables do not get caught on the front edge of the service access cover as you
move it forward. The tabs on the service access cover slide beneath the upper chassis ledge, and the
two thumbscrews align with the screw holes on the rear of the system chassis.
3. Tighten the thumbscrews located on the rear of the cover.
4. Return the system to the operating position as described in “Returning the 296/C3 to the Operating
Position” on page 7 or “Placing the 296/E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page 7.
