there is a defect in the tachograph or on one of the individual components of the system. In this case, the components involved
must be replaced. For more details see Chapter 11.

Tools for error diagnosis
You can use test equipment or the EFAS Service Tool available from Intellic as a fault diagnosis tool.
The EFAS Service Tool is a program that can be executed under the Microsoft operating system Windows on a desktop PC or a
notebook. The EFAS Service Tool offers a range of options for the configuration and diagnosis of the EFAS controller as well as
additional test and software update functions.
The following contains an overview of the functions:
y
Reading and writing standard ISO parameters
y
Reading and writing specific EFAS parameters
y
Reading the DTC fault memory
y
Resetting the DTC fault memory
y
Execution of integrated self-test functions and additional diagnostics functions
y
Importing software updates
DTCs that occur are displayed in clear text within the program, as a result of which, the error diagnostics is simplified. The
program supports all important EFAS-specific parameters. As a result, additional diagnostics functions are made available and
you have the option to change these parameters, in case your diagnostics or calibration device does not support these specific
parameters of EFAS.
The EFAS Service Tool communicates with the tachograph EFAS via the serial front interface (download interface). A serial cable
is required to connect to the recording device’s service jack, or optionally a USB/serial converter if the computer does not have
a serial RS-232 interface. An alternative would be to use a service cable with integrated USB/serial converter.
For detailed information on the functions provided by the software tool and working with it, please refer to the manual of the
EFAS Service Tool.
10.6
Integrated test functions
10.6.1
Overview
The tachograph EFAS has integrated test functions for testing the function of the individual operating components such as the
keyboard, the display unit, both card readers and the printer. In addition, there are other test functions available, which provide
information about the internal hardware functions and the signal statuses on the connector panel. These signals include digital
inputs and outputs, the power supply and the engine speed input.
The following test functions are supported:
y
Printer test
y
Card reading test
y
Display unit test
y
Keyboard test
y
General hardware test
y
Testing the warning lamp and the acoustic alarm
y
Testing the speed signal
y
Testing the on-board power supply
y
Testing for digital inputs / outputs at the connector panel
The test functions can be called by suitable test instruments that support these functions or with the help of the
EFAS Service
Tool
. The test instrument or the computer with EFAS is connected via the front interface cable for this purpose. In order to call
up the test functions, the ignition must be switched on and the tachograph EFAS must be in the CALIBRATION operating mode.
The test functions are described separately in the following chapters.
Note
Please note that the test functions listed are either not supported or supported only partially by test instruments
that are commercially available. If necessary, ask the test instrument manufacturer for updated software of the
test instrument that you use.
Note
The
EFAS Service Tool
supports the test functions listed here completely and thus serves as an alternative to
the test instrument for fault diagnosis.
