Make sure there is no load
on the motorcycle; remove all
items of luggage, if carried.
Use the tool from the on-board
toolkit to slacken screw

Hold the motorcycle upright
(do not prop it on the side
stand) and measure distance
D
from bottom edge 1 of the rear
trim panel to screw 2 of the
chain guard.
Apply the rider's weight to the
motorcycle.
With the assistance of a
second person, measure
distance
D between points 1
and 2 again and calculate the
difference (negative spring
displacement) between the two
readings.

Suspension compression at
rear wheel
10 mm (One-up riding without
luggage)
16 mm (One-up with luggage)
26 mm (Two-up with luggage)
To reduce negative spring dis-
placement (increase spring pre-
load, in other words), use the
tool from the on-board toolkit
to turn adjusting ring
