1.5 Hydraulic Reservoir Filters
Your BARKO Harvester has two in-tank filters, a MAIN RETURN and a CASE RETURN, that need
to be regularly replaced to keep your machine’s hydraulic oil clean and free of contaminants.
See the Inspection & Service Schedule in Chapter 13 of this manual for BARKO recommended
replacement intervals.
Also inspect the Hydraulic Reservoir Breather Filter for timely replacement.
1.5.1 Changing the In-Tank Main and Case Filter Elemnets
Ÿ
Make sure the engine has been shut down and notice is posted that
service work is being performed on the machine.
Ÿ
Shut off the Master Electrical Disconnect before beginning any
service procedure.
Ÿ
At operating temperatures, the engine, exhaust system components,
cooling system components, and hydraulic system components are
HOT. Any contact with these items can cause severe burns.
Ÿ
Release pressure from the hydraulic tank before performing any
work on the tank.
Ÿ
Pressure can be maintained in the hydraulic system circuits after the
machine has been shut down. Release this pressure before opening
any hydraulic line or tank cover.
When changing return filters, care must be taken to make sure that any
contaminates (dirt, forest debris, etc.) around the top of the tank or the filter head,
do not fall into the main tank and no contaminated or unfiltered hydraulic oil is
allowed to drain into the tank.

Place the booms on the ground and shut down the engine.
Release boost pressure from the tank by running the vacuum pump or by removing tank vent plug
from the tank first and bleed the air off. This must be done before adding oil or working on the
hydraulic system. Be sure to clean around vent plug before opening.
Clean all debris from area around oil filter covers.
Remove covers, make sure O-Rings on tank stays intact. Replace if damaged.
Visually inspect the condition of the element before removing.
Ÿ
If there are no bronze or brass specks visible, remove the filter element as gently as possible
avoiding contaminant drops in the clean side of the housing and install a new one.
Ÿ
If there has been a known failure, or there are bronze or brass specks visible, extra care
must be taken when removing the filters so contaminated oil cannot drain into the main tank.
Insert new filter elements, replace the cover o-rings and covers.
Dispose used filters in accordance with local regulations.
