3.10 SAE J1766 measurement
The “
SAE J1766 measurement
” mode is used to measure insulation resistance in accordance with
the recommendation of SAE J1766 (SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers, J1766 “Recommended
Practice for Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Battery Systems Crash Integrity Testin
g”).
1.
When you click on the
SAE J1766 measurement
mode (see Fig. 3-1), a screen of safety
instructions will appear.
You must read and observe these safety instructions.
2.
Click on

.
3.
The AVL DiTEST HV Safety 2000
safety test
is carried out:
- Connect the probe tips briefly
- Press and hold the test button on the red test adapter until the safety test has completed
- The result of the safety test is displayed
4.
Connect the HV battery to the system and click on
F8 Next
.
5.
A screen with a description of the SAE J1766 measurement appears:
1. Battery voltage measurement HV+ against HV-
2. Insulation measurement HV+ against Chassis
3. Insulation measurement HV- against Chassis
Observe this information and proceed as described below.
6.
Click on
F8 Next
.
7.
Battery voltage measurement:
Place the probe tips on HV+ and HV- as described on the screen.
8.
Press and hold the test button on the red test adapter until a stable measured value is
displayed.
9.
The result of the measurement is displayed.
(If the test button is not kept pressed for long enough, the following message will appear:
“
Measurement invalid: Test button released too early
”. If this happens, start a new
measurement.
Press and hold the test button on the red test adapter until a stable measured value is
displayed.
10. Select internal resistance
Select the internal resistance of the meter to be used for measurement. As a rule of thumb
500 times the battery voltage should be used. The unit calculates a standard value from the
previously measured HV battery voltage and suggests the next higher internal resistance. This
value can be changed manually if needed.
11. Click on
F8 Next
.
12. Insulation measurement HV+ against Chassis:
Place the probe tips on HV+ and on the chassis as described on the screen.
13. Press and hold the test button on the red test adapter until a stable measured value is
displayed.
14. The result of the measurement is displayed,
(If the test button is not kept pressed for long enough, the following message will appear:
“
Measurement invalid: Test button released too early
”. If this happens, start a new
measurement.
Press and hold the test button on the red test adapter until a stable measured value is
displayed.
15. After the waiting time of 3 seconds has elapsed, pressing the test button on the red test
adapter takes you to “
Insulation measurement HV- against Chassis
”.
Proceed as instructed on the screen.
16. The result of the SAE J1766 measurement is displayed after the waiting time of 3 seconds has
elapsed, see
