RS-232 plug allows for sending/receiving
short messages via the GSM network.
Switch on the PC and start the optional Audiotel Engineering dedicated SW program
(Audiotel Connect). This application provides easy-to-use commands for sending, reading
and managing short messages. If this optional application is not available, the setting-up,
sending, reading and deleting of short messages can be performed by means of a terminal
emulator application (e.g.:Hyperterminal) as described below.
1. Set the emulator to text mode by typing:
AT+CMGF=1 <Enter>
2. Set the messages received indicator:
AT+CNMI=1,1,0,0,1 <Enter>
3. Set the service centre address:
AT+CSCA= number <Enter>
(e.g.: +393359609600 is the TIM service centre number).
Typically the service centre address is already stored.
In order to verify it, type
AT+CSCA? <Enter>
4.5.1 Sending a short message
Type:
AT+CMGS=<dest_address><Enter><text><Ctrl Z>
where:
<dest_address>
is the cellular number to send the short message to;
<text>
is a short message, max. 160 characters.
The sending of the message is confirmed by the string:
+CMGS: <msg_ref>
where:
<msg_ref>
is a progressive number.
4.5.2 Reading received messages
The messages received are stored on the SIM card.
1. To list all the received messages, type:
AT+CMGL= ALL <Enter>
or type:
AT+CMGR=<number of the received message> <Enter>
.
2. It is possible to select a message to be read among the read messages and the unread
messages. Refer to the manual AT Commands.
4.5.3 Deleting messages
The received messages are stored on the SIM card and should be deleted as soon as
possible (usually as soon as they’ve been read), because when the SIM is full it is not able
to store new incoming messages. To delete a message, type:
AT+CMGD=<pos> <Enter>
where:
<pos>
is the position of the string to be deleted.
