5.3. Start-Up and Operation
Important
During initial heater startup, qualified gas service personnel must perform a gas leak check to verify the
gas tightness of the heater’s components and piping under normal operating conditions.
5.3.1 Liquid Propane Startup
AGI liquid propane heaters require vapor for startup.
Important
A heater equipped with a vaporizer coil must use liquid propane. Vapor propane is only used for initial
warm-up. Using vapor propane constantly will overheat the vaporizer causing shutdown.
1. Start the heater/fan system using the following sequence:
a. Start the fan.
b. Start the heater.
c. Slightly open liquid valve.
Important
When operating vapor propane-fueled heaters in very cold weather, the heater may not be able to
obtain sufficient fuel to reach the desired operating temperature. This is due to very low propane
vapor pressure at cold temperatures. To overcome this situation, the tank can be warmed by using
an electric warming blanket that has been approved for this purpose.
When warming the heater as instructed using an approved electric blanket, extreme care
must be exercised. Never use an open flame directly on the tank.
2. Allow the heater to run for at least five minutes.
3. Slowly open the liquid valve completely.
4. Adjust the vaporizer until the output plumbing from the vaporizer is warm to the touch.
Important
This process may include some trial-and-error due to varying ambient temperature conditions. Be
careful to allow only a small amount of liquid to vaporize. Do not open the valve quickly as doing so will
flood the fuel loop.
5.3.2 On-Off Heater Operation
1. Adjust the plenum thermostat to the highest desired drying temperature.
2. Push the fan start button.
3. Turn the burner switch to the ON positions. The fan will now run for 15 seconds as it purges the drying
system before an ignition attempt.
4. The heater will attempt to ignite the burner for 10 seconds.
Note
If the burner fails to ignite after 10 seconds, the unit will sit idle for 15 seconds before initiating a
second ignition attempt. If the burner fails to ignite after three attempts, you must reset the burner
by flipping the burner ignition switch off and then back on. The heater will now make three more
attempts to ignite. If ignition fails after the second series of attempts, see the troubleshooting
section of this manual.
