6.1 Shelf Management Overview
This chapter provides an overview about the Shelf Manager on the PAC-4010 System.
The Advantech Shelf Management solution is based on the Advantech IPMI Core
supporting the Aspeed AST2400 ARM926EJ-S based microcontroller. The Shelf
Management implementation is aligned to the PICMG 3.x ATCA specifications with
some modifications to fulfill the needs driven by the Packetarium design.
The Shelf Manager monitors and controls the Shelf to assure a proper operation of the
Node Boards and all other components of the Shelf itself. It will adapt the fan speed
based on system events and issue alarms for events which might require manual
intervention, such as replacing a failing power supply.
The Shelf Manager communicates with the Node Boards via the IPMB and LAN
interfaces. It can be accessed with outside entities with LAN (RMCP/RMCP+, SSH) or
Serial applications. SNMP is available for additional management over Network.
6.2 Shelf Manager Access Connectivity
This chapter will provide a general view on the available interfaces for the user in order
to communicate with the Shelf Manager. The Chapter concentrates on how the
interfaces can be accessed and will just provide basic information on the used
(standard) protocols, such as IPMI and RMCP.
SNMP as a very power full management protocol will be explained in

management LAN switch (BCM5396) does not set any limitations to the connectivity.
