7.4 Residual risks
The residual risks are dangers that cannot be eliminated by design and/or the use of special safety
measures. These risks can also be traced back to non-obvious risk potentials.
Examples of residual risks are:
➢
The tips are very dangerous sharp objects and are lifted off the ground in the lowered position.
➢
The feeder chains, as they can pull foreign bodies and body parts (arms, legs, etc.) into the
machine and crush them with devastating force.
➢
The snapping rollers rotate in the opposing directions and can carry away and crush foreign
bodies and body parts (arms, legs, etc.) with devastating force.
➢
As they are sharp and rotate at high speed, the cutting blades of the choppers present a high
risk of injury with violent effects on anybody that approaches them;
➢
The force of the auger, as it can also pull in and crush large bodies such as people or animals.
Do not touch it or walk on it until you have made sure that the header extension has been
stopped and disconnected from the combine harvester.
➢
The whole cornheader and the folding side parts as they can move and crush nearby objects
or persons. The area of the hinge system (capping) for closing/opening the frame is also ex-
tremely vulnerable.
➢
The protective hoods and tips. Although they are resistant, and can withstand weights over 150
kg, they can also be wet and slippery during the working phase and should therefore not be
walked on.
