Server Problem Analysis

Following is a list of problems you might encounter with the terminal server. The list
includes descriptions of correct operations and possible solutions:

Problem:

While loading from the network, no messages appear after you type several
RETURNs. (Note that when the Terminal Server 720 is loading from a
Memory card, you do not see any messages, and cannot access the terminal
server.)

Correct Operation:

The port normally autobauds to the correct baud rate when you press several RETURNs. Once
a port speed has been selected, the port light illuminates (see Figure 2-2). In the first 20 seconds
after power up, the server runs the self tests and does not respond to the RETURNs. Twenty
seconds after power up, however, the port displays a message in response to a RETURN. (Note:
you can disable the messages using the Initialization Configuration Menu.)

Possible Solutions:

You may have disabled message display using the Initialization Configuration Menu. This
does not prevent the unit from loading. If you want to see the messages, use the Initialization
Configuration Menu and enable the messages again.

Determine whether the port is receiving characters properly. Type several RETURNs and
make sure the PORT light is ON steadily. This indicates that the Terminal Server 720 has
received characters and selected a communication speed. The port will autobaud for port
speeds between 75 and 38.4K bps. If your device is set to a higher port speed, manually select a
speed and disable autobauding.

If the port is receiving characters, the Terminal Server 720 might have autobauded to the
wrong speed. Press the BREAK key to re-initialize the autobaud sequence, then type several
RETURNs.

If the port is not receiving characters, a cable or device problem may exist. Try changing the
type of cable used (e.g., change from straight-through to crossover). Note that a Terminal
Server 720-to-DTE device configuration requires a crossover cable connection. Refer to
Chapter 3 for cable descriptions.
