TYPE RC AUTOMATIC RECLOSING RELAY
C A U T I O N

AP P L I C A T I O N
The typ e RC auto mat ic reclo sing rel ay is used
fo r auto matic reclo sure o f AC o r
DC el ectricall y op er
ated ci rcuit breakers after they have been op ened by
o vercurrent o r
oth er pro tecti ve rel ay actio n.
The rel ay
may be adj usted to pro vide several reclo sures at p re
determined time interval s, so that in case the breaker
do es no t remain clo sed after the first reclo sure addi
tio nal reclo sures will be made.
The first reclo sure
usuall y is an instantaneo us reclo sure thro ugh p re
clo sed co ntacts si nce system op erating exp erienc e
has sho wn that the majo rity o f faul ts are o f a tem
po rary nature, such as l ightning fl asho vers, and will
no t be re- establ ished after interrup tio n o f the faul t
current.
Co nseq uentl y,
service interrup tio n can be
minimized by the use o f an instantaneo us reclo sure.
Ho wever, the first reclo sure may be del ayed if desired.
In cas e the circuit breaker do es no t remain clo sed
after the first reclo sure, the rel ay will make additio nal
reclo sures at sui tably graded i nterv al s. I t i s
co mmo n
pra ctice to
mak e two additio nal reclo sures, but the
rel ay may
be a dj usted to
make any num ber up to a
to tal o f six reclo sures if desired. If the breaker do es
no t remai n clo sed aft er the final reclo sure, the timing
drum stop s in the " Lo cko ut" po sitio n, and any further
attemp ts at reclo sure must be made by manual op era
tio n o f the co ntrol switch. Ho wever, if the breaker
remains clo sed after any auto mat ic reclo sure, o r, sub
seq ue ntl y, after manual reclo sure,
the rel ay timing
drum will advance to and stop at the " Start" po sitio n,
where the rel ay is in readiness fo r ano ther cycle o f
auto matic reclo sures follo wing the next tripp ing o f
the breaker.
Fo r any auto matic reclo sing appl icatio n, the de
rating facto rs fo r breaker interrup ting abil ity sho ul d

gear train mo unted behind the fro nt sub- base.

The ge ar train reductio n ratio is adj ustabl e. The
drum sp eed dial co ntains indices,. which are l ined up
with an index mark to mesh the p rop er gears fo r the
desi red drum sp eed. A cl amp ing screw is pro vided at
the edge o f this dial. A p ush ro d is lo cated o n the
fro nt o f the drum to demesh the drum and p ermit free
manual drum ro tatio n.
