TYPE RC AU TOMATI C RECLOSING R ELAY
S E T T I N G S
No settings are neces sary unless factory settings
do not meet the application requirements . The factory
settings are for thre e reclo sures - im mediate , 1 5 and
45 seconds, w ith a drum revolution in 60 seconds .
Contact #4 is set to c lo se in the lockout position.
Contact # 1 4 is set to c lose in the s tart position for
instantaneous trip lockout after the first reclosure.
The standard relay i s s hi p ped with the
X
and Y coil
and motor coil res istors connecte d . With these con
nections the
X
and Y coils may be u sed at 1 25 volts
de or 240 volts ac ; the motor, at 240 volts ac.

I f th e
X
and Y coils o f t h e s tandard relay are to
be used on 48 volts de or 1 20 volts ac, the
X
and Y
coil resistor must be bypas sed. If the motor is to be
e nergized at 1 20 volts a c , the motor c oil resistor
must be bypassed.

To c hange the drum speed, loosen the c lamping
screw at the edge of the drum speed dial, depres s the
push rod on the drum, and rotate the motor and gear
asse mbly to the des ired spe ed position, by pushing
on one or more of the posts betwe en the motor and
gear mounting p late s . Then tighten the clamping
screw.
Select the fastest drum speed which will
accomodate the desired reclose timin g .
R e c l o s e Sequence
The # 3 cam s prings ( w hic h initiate reclosing) c an
be set at any p oint fro m the start position , to the
50th scale d ivision, by loosening the cam spring
screw and sliding the cam to the desired position.
Th e c ams may not be spaced c loser than 1 0 scale
divisions. If a c loser spac i n g is u sed there is not
suffic ient time to o pen the #3 contact and then un
latch the Y unit. Thus, the maximum number of re
c lo sures is six at the 0, 1 0 , 20 , 3 0 , 40 and 50 scale
division points . A c am spring may not be plac ed
pas t the 50th scale division. Otherwis e insufficient
time is available to allow the Y unit to unlatch and
# 5 cam screw to travel clear of the latch before the
lockout position. A thin headed screw is located in
the #3 groove near the start position. This s crew
acts as a s top to prevent a #3 cam spring setting
which would close the #3 contact with the drum in the
in the lockout position.
After the # 3 cam springs have been s et, the #5
c am scre ws must be located to unlatch the Y unit
after each #3 c ontact c losure. The #5 screws s hould
not rotate the Y unit latch arm until the #3 contact
has opened. In addition, the # 5 cam s cre ws must
be c lear of the Y unit latch arm before the next #3
contact closure .
Hardware is shipped with each re lay to provide
additional
c ams
for applications requiring more
cams than are u s ed with the factory settings .

The relays should be mounted o n s witchboard
panels or their e quivalent in a location free from dirt,
moisture , excessive vibration, and heat. Mount the
relay vertically by means of the four m ountin g holes
o n the flange for semi-flush mounti n g or by means of
the rear mounti n g stud or studs for proj ection mount
i n g. Either a mounting stu d or the mounting screws
may be utilized for groundi n g the relay . The elec
trical c onnections m ay be m ad e directly to the termi
nals by means of scre ws for s te e l panel m ounting or
to the terminal studs furnished with the re lay for
thick p anel m ounting. The terminal studs may be
easily rem oved or inserted by locking two nuts on
the stud and then turning the proper nut with a wrench .

C a u t i o n
I f the circuit breaker does not h ave a latch c heck
switc h , reclosing should be de lay e d by use o f the Y6
c ontact either to directly energize the c lose circuit,
or
to e nergize an e xternal auxiliary re lay . Using the
Y6 c ontact will delay rec losing about 2 cycles after
5 2bb cont act c l os e s with
X
&
Y energized by ac
voltage; 4 cycles, with
X
& Y
energized by de voltage.

The proper adjustments to insure c orrect o pera
tion of this relay have been made at the factory . Re
adjustm ent after rec eipt by the customer will be nec
essary only as required by the reclosin g cycle require
ments and the supply v oltages of a particular appli
tion as described un der "Settings . " In reassem bling
the relay after repairs , or in c hecking the adjustments
at re gular maintenance perio ds, the instructions be
low should be followed .
