5.23.3 802.1q VLAN
The IEEE 802.1q specification covers tagged-based. Therefore, it is possible to create
a VLAN across devices from different switch venders. IEEE 802.1Q VLAN uses a
technique to insert a “tag” into the Ethernet frames. The tag contains a VLAN Identifier
(VID) that indicates the VLAN numbers.
From this menu, you can create a tag-based VLAN, and enable or disable the Generic
Attribute Registration Protocol (
GVRP
) protocol. There are 256 VLAN groups available
for configuration. Once 802.1q is enabled, all the ports on the switch belong to default
VLAN, VID is 1. The default VLAN cannot be deleted.
GVRP allows automatic VLAN configuration between the switch and nodes. If the
switch is connected to a device with GVRP enabled, you can send a GVRP request
using the VID of a VLAN defined on the switch; the switch will automatically add that
device to the existing VLAN.
